Tour de Farm and the Celebrity Chef Tour Join Forces

There are some things in life that are just worth making the extra effort to get to experience. An example of this would be a recent farm-to-table dinner I attended. Not only was this a farm-served dinner with sustainable and local food hosted by Scott Pampuch of Tour de Farm fame, but he was hosting the Celebrity Chef Tour.

The chance to be served by not only Scott, but also Tim McKee of La Belle Vie and the best chef in the Midwest James Beard award winner, Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods, Dara Moskowitz Grumdahl pairing the wine (both are also James Beard winners) and National Geographic Fellow Barton Seaver was not one to turn down. So, I headed out to Star Prairie Trout Farm perfect when you’re hosting chefs dedicated to seafood sustainability for a dinner I won’t soon forget.

With Dara's first book being titled Drink This: Wine Made Simple and her James Beard awards being in food and wine writing, it should be no surprise that her pairings were spot on. The bonus, though, was that she walked around for each course to describe the different pairings and what you should be tasting, which helped you appreciate it all the more.

The scale of the production and getting over 100 guests food in the middle of a farm, a trout farm with water everywhere at that, was nothing short of amazing. Watching these men and women work was awe inspiring.

Not your ordinary grilled trout, this gorgeous course was rolled in crispy skin and served with perfectly roasted baby beets. Chef: Tim McVee

Chef: Andrew Zimmern. I'm a huge Andrew fan, and not just because he's friends with Steph and John or said Ole's meat was "amazing" after he tried it. I like him because he comes off as a nice, everyday guy with a fabulous sense of humor.

At the end of the night, one of my favorite parts from dinner was simply the strangers I was sitting with for dinner. They were there not because they were friends with the chefs or food writers, but they were just people who loved and enjoyed food and believed in what these chefs were doing and bringing awareness to.
