    Don't run out of candy
No one wants to run out of candy, but it can happen. Stock up on a little extra to make sure you don't run out in the middle of the trick-or-treating frenzy. You can always eat the leftovers, or donate them to a worthy cause.

    Don't show favoritism
Some trick-or-treaters will be dressed in adorable, well thought out costumes. Others will not be. Spare everyone's feelings and make an effort not to play favorites with trick-or-treaters.

    Don't have trick-or-treaters in
In the past, trick-or-treaters mostly visited close neighbors. These days, trick-or-treaters have a lot of possibly unfamiliar ground to cover. Whether you know them or not, it's best not to invite trick-or-treaters in (even if it is for your special jack-o-lantern cupcakes).

  • Feel free not to participate 7 of 10
    Feel free not to participate
There was a family in my neighborhood that left the lights on to give you the impression they were giving out candy, but when you got up there they just told you about how their religious beliefs precluded them from participating and have you considered joining their fun religion? Look, if you don't like Halloween, feel free to turn off the lights and sit it out. Don't be a buzzkill.

This is the deal -- one person goes to the trouble of getting dressed up, another person goes to the trouble of giving them candy. No costume, no candy.

    Do be mindful of pedestrians
Did you know that more kids are hit by cars on Halloween than on any other night of the year? I just made that up, but there are a lot of kids out running around after dark in masks that make it so they can't see that well. It's not going to kill you to drive slowly this one night.
