Who knows how long this will last, but I’ve been on a big “Vegan Before 6:00″ kick lately — you know, the Mark Bittman “diet” where you eat no animal products before 6:00, at which point you are free to gorge on anything you’d like. (In addition to improving his general health, he lost 35 pounds this way, all of which he discusses in Food Matters.) I had figured out lunch — my almond butter and raspberry sandwiches or hummus and cucumber sandwiches on whole wheat pita have me covered — but breakfast was stumping me. Mostly because my husband has been making the most delicious yogurt fruit shakes for his girls (including me) pretty much every morning in my house for as long as I can remember. To ask him to shake up the routine, well, it was asking a lot. Last week, though, we tried replacing our plain Stonyfield with Stonyfield’s O’Soy line. The kids didn’t even notice. And I have to say, I could barely taste the difference. Which is more than I could say when I poured plain soy milk into my morning coffee. Again, not sure how long this is going to last.
