6 Surprising Foods Banned on the Paleo Diet

Our goal therefore should be to maximize the quality of what we eat to help prevent these chronic and deadly diseases. One of the ways to do so, according to its advocates, is the Paleo diet.

While there are many pros and cons of the Paleo diet, there’s no ignoring that it’s a big trend right now. The Paleo diet bases its foundation on the way cavemen ate way back when- lots of vegetables, high quality meat, eggs, fruit, and nuts. You may be surprised at some of the foods banned on the Paleo Diet, as they’re often at the top of the “to-eat” list on many other diets.

    Dairy isn't as good for you as you may think. Although some Paleo-ites do consume the occasional serving of dairy, technically milk and cheese are discouraged on the Paleo diet. Dairy causes an inflammatory reaction in the body, which is exactly what this caveman-based diet is trying to avoid. In addition, milk can be laden with things that really shouldn't be there, including hormones and antibiotics. Luckily there are plenty of other ways to get calcium.

    And yes, that means peanut butter too. Although they have "nut" in the name, peanuts are actually part of the legume family. Supporters of the Paleo diet believe that a component in legumes called phytate is actually an "antinutrient," meaning not only can we not digest it properly, but it interferes with digestion of other vitamins and minerals.

    Like peanuts, beans are legumes. Although packed with fiber and protein, beans are forbidden on the Paleo diet because of their phytate content. While banned on the Paleo diet, others believe beans are still a good source of nutrition.

    Potatoes are banned on the Paleo diet due to their high starch content and over abundance in the typical American diet. They're not entirely banned though, as they're encouraged for athletes and other individuals with high energy needs. Sweet potatoes are usually given the green light. Other white veggies are ok too.

    Grains are kicked to the curb on the Paleo diet, even the ancient grain and superfood quinoa. Like milk, grains are thought to be inflammatory to the body and a proposed cause of leaky gut syndrome. So even though whole wheat is a better choice than the refined processed stuff, it's still a no-no on the Paleo diet.

    Commonly thought to be a vegetable, corn is actually a grain, and is therefore forbidden on the Paleo diet just like quinoa, wheat, and other grains. Besides, most corn products in the US are highly processed and contain GMOs.
