Raise your hand if you have gone to the gym or went out for a run, and later that day ate an ice cream cone, a plate of nachos or a big hunk of cake.  You are not alone.  Self-sabotage is done subconsciously yet it can really stifle our progress.  This time of year can be especially challenging when it comes to staying on track.  Here are eight ways to stop sabotaging your diet and fitness plan:

Write down your objective, whether it is fitness, overall health or weight loss.  If you have a particular reason for choosing the goal, write it down too.  Place your written goal somewhere you will see it daily as a reminder to stay on track.

  • Develop a clear strategy. 3 of 9

Make a plan.  Set specific steps and a time frame towards reaching your goal.  Experts say that the main reason why people do not reach their goal is that they do not have a realistic plan.

  • Get visual. 4 of 9

Images are powerful.  If you are a visual person, cut out a picture or create a vision board of what your life will look like once you have accomplished your goal.  Whether it is completing your first race or fitting into a fabulous dress let your vision board be your motivation for success.

Grab a friend. Even if your friend has a different end goal in mind, you can still support one another along the way.  It is always easier to achieve an objective with a strong support system.

  • Utilize technology. 6 of 9

Keep a journal or use an app to track your progress.  No matter what your goal may be, there is very likely an app (or ten) for that.

  • Stop comparing yourself. 7 of 9

Remember that you are YOU and no one else.  Set your own objectives and create your own plan.  No one else lives in the same body as you, so stop comparing yourself to anyone else.

  • Enjoy the process. 8 of 9

Celebrate small victories on the way to your overall goal.  Do not lose sight of the fact that with each step you are making progress.  When you reach that halfway point, do something to reward yourself for your accomplishment!

Likewise, do not abandon your overall goal if you have one or two bad days.  Everyone has bad days.  Even the most disciplined of athletes have a treat or miss a workout every now and then.  Forgive yourself and just get back on track!

Whatever the reason for sabotage, do not let perfect get in the way of good.  Be kind to yourself and keep moving forward towards your goal!
