Rocking out to my favorite tunes was – and still is – a great way for me to relax, blow off stress, and get moving. Back in my days as a school girl, I would spend hours dancing to the top hits of the day. It could be quite a workout, and a fun one at that.
It’s no surprise to me, then, that Michelle Obama is using the inherent element of fun in dancing to hot music, to encourage kids to get moving as part of her “Let’s Move” initiative. Next month she’s releasing a hip-hop album of music designed to teach kids about healthy living and taking care of their bodies by eating well and being active.
Mrs. Obama has been working tirelessly over the past 3 1/2 years to help the kids of our country learn to make healthier choices, and she’s had lots of success. She taught Cookie Monster that cookies are a “sometimes” food, planted a garden at the White House, and encouraged schools to feed kids real food. Curating an album to get kids dancing and learning more about healthy living is a logical step.
Mrs. Obama’s album, called Songs For a Healthier America features Jordin Sparks, DMC, Ashanti, and songs like “Veggie Luv,” “Get Up Sit Up,” and “U R What You Eat.” Unfortunately, Mrs. Obama doesn’t sing on the album. (Sad, we know.)
Truth be told, I’m not a music critic. I wouldn’t know if the album is any good. I don’t know if I would have any interest in listening or dancing to songs about veggies – even if they were by some of my favorite artists. But I am all for creating healthy habits and making an active lifestyle something you don’t have to think so much about – you just do it. And if this helps kids internalize healthy living, then rock on.
