8 Ways to Stay Safe While Exercising Outdoors

So important: Ways to stay safe while exercising outdoorsThis time of year many more people take to roads and paths to exercise outside.  While it is a great idea to get out there and take advantage of the gorgeous weather, there may be unknown dangers lurking, such as pets or other animals and distracted drivers.  Here are some ways to stay safe while exercising outdoors:

  • Wear a bracelet or necklace with identification, such as one from MedicAlert or RoadID.
  • Wear brightly colored clothing to make yourself visible to drivers during the daytime.
  • Consider wearing a reflector vest while walking, running, biking, or hiking at night. Some runners prefer to wear reflective sleeves, since constantly swinging arms may be more easily visible to drivers.
  • Carry your personal identification and medical card in a zippered sleeve, belt, in a pouch around your ankle, or even in your shoe.
  • You can also bring along your cell phone by wearing it on your or arm or ankle in a phone carrier.
  • Rather than carrying a flashlight for nighttime runs and hikes, consider wearing a clip-on light to both make you more visible and help you see your path.
  • Carrying pepper spray may be helpful for personal protection since it works on both people and animals.
  • Go with a friend or bring your dog along with you. You are less likely to be approached when out with a friend or a dog beside you.

No matter who you are running with, what you are bringing with you, or what time of day it is, consider what you can do to stay safe while exercising outdoors. Remember, your safety is at stake. Be safe!
