While I love that this is getting some publicity/awareness, I don’t love the way you’ve worded it on the site: “committing this crime,” “guilty of,” “commit this act,” etc. Feeding your child is hardly a crime… even in public. This is THE healthiest way for a woman to care for her baby (and studies have shown herself!). Please join the world of the aware – and give these mommies some positive support.
Good for them! More women need to be breastfeeding, at home and in public! I will say, I am not fond of the way this article portrays breastfeeding as “committing a crime”. It is hard enough trying to normalize it without the media portraying it as something bad. Shame on the author for that
The person who wrote this is an idiot! It is NOT a crime to NIP. These women aren’t offenders they’re loving mothers who care that their children are fed with the best possible food nature intended. I hope the writer of this article eats her food in the dirty bathroom where she probably expects mothers to go nurse. As for all the mommies who breastfeed in public, Bravo.
PS a hospital is a private entity you fool!
The writer of this article makes it sound like a bad thing to breast feed. They are “guilty” of breast feeding in public. It would be much easier physically and wouldn’t have to be worried about pictures being taken of their breasts to feed their babies formula, but it’s not at all as healthy for their babies. These women are guilty of making a decision to better their children’s health, emotional stability, boosting their immune systems and doing what is natural and all around best for their babies. I hope your ignorant author does not dissuade anyone from breast feeding.
More power to them! And I’m so glad Maggie “doesn’t care who is watching”! Why should she? She’s only providing the food which nature intended for her baby! Why should it have to be a private matter? Breasts are for food, it’s just this screwed up western world that has sexualized them and made breastfeeding a shameful thing. Also hooray for Mayim Bialik, nothing wrong with breastfeeding til three either – very healthy and normal (true weaning age isn’t til between 4-7 years of age). No wonder there is such a high prevalence of diabetes, cancer, obesity, and other diseases in the US, since the very first most nutritious food is frowned upon, how do we even stand a chance?
Since the author put “committing the crime” in quotes, it is entirely possible he was being facetious with the fact that it is most definitely NOT a crime and in agreement with such. I saw this as a VERY POSITIVE article with tongue in cheek wording as sooooooo many people are “disgusted” by the normalcy of public breastfeeding. As supporters of NIP we should UNPLUG from the emotion of being criticized for NIPping ourselves and ACT unruffled and unconcerned to GET THE POINT ACROSS that it isn’t a big deal and let the naysayers be. If the naysayers don’t get a counter reaction from us (unless we are actually being harassed) then we just go about our business as if nothing was being criticized. Eventually NIP will be more fully accepted
It’s so wonderful for these celebs to publicly do what is NORMAL for mothers and babies, breastfeed. And thank goodness for Mayim, helping mothers everywhere realize that breastfeeding a toddler can and should be done. I don’t appreciate the tone of this article, written as if these moms are committing a crime. Get grip folks, breast feeding is normal and should be treated that way.
Love the supportive comments on here! Makes it easier for those of us just starting off to stick with it when we see great comments like these.
Breastfeeding in public isn’t anything to be ashamed of and those who sexualize the feeding of a child have serious issues of their own.
Oh, please, the author is just being sarcastic by using the words “crime” and similar – it’s usually how breastfeeding in public is seen by uneducated masses. This is a very positive and a very pro-breastfeeding article! I love it!
I love seeing these pics of celebs nursing in public. That’s awesome. But why in the world would you call NIP “committing the crime”??? Even if you meant it as a joke- in light of the harassment that nursing moms face every day, and the fact that nursing is protected by law in most states, calling NIP a crime is hardly a funny joke. Please choose your words more carefully next time.
Every child has the right to the breast milk that is designed specifically for them. And, by the way, it’s not unusual for women to breastfeed a toddler…so Mayim (as much as I dislike her), has no need to “admit” to nursing her 3yo. She’s doing what’s best for her child, and I’ll be doing the same.
More power to them.
Oh good Lord. These women are not “guilty” of anything. They are being modest even. All this proves is that they are NORMAL people. Stop harassing them.
Shame on you for vilifying breast feeding. Women who breast feed in public ARE NOT committing a crime, being disgraceful or guilty of anything other than providing their babies with the BEST source of food and strengthening the bond that is created between the child and mother.Breast milk gives infants all the nutrients they need for healthy development. It is safe and contains antibodies that help protect infants from common childhood illnesses – such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, the two primary causes of child mortality worldwide. (Source- WHO-WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION – plus plenty more references are available). I completely agree with Katie…on all points, it is well documented – the author should have done his homework first. Shame on your EIC for allowing this to go out this way… it’s no wonder our world is in shambles when the natural and simple act (that has been going on since our existence) of breastfeeding is vilified.
The wording of this is bizarre. Kudos to these moms, but not so much for the author of this piece.
Gwen is guilty of breastfeeding in public? Come on, how about an even handed tone here? It would be fine for her to wear a skimpy bikini in a video clip, but it’s a crime to show them to feed?
“whether you agree with breastfeeding or not” – how about using language that supports reader choice?
Love the photos! I agree with everyone else – what’s with the wording?? Why is breastfeeding in public a “crime”? Grow up & respect these awesome breastfeeding moms!
I would feed my daughter where ever and when ever she needed feeding. I didn’t give a toss who saw or was offended by my bare breast and neither should they. Grow up
Committing the crime?? You’re kidding, right? I’m not sure how you think babies were breastfed before companies put dried cows milk and shitty chemicals into a tin, called it ‘formula’ and made loads of money out of selling women emergency milk as ‘nutritious’, but your wording helps no one. Props for blogging women breastfeeding in public, but try a bit harder when you’re describing it next time. Breastfeeding in public is legally protected in hundreds of states, territories an countries around the world.
this article would have been great if it weren’t for “guilty of”, “committed the crime”, “was caught”…. etc etc. These are not things to be ashamed of, they are nothing to hide, they are nothing to feel guilty about… this is feeding your child and doing what you were made to do. Breasts ARE. NOT. SEXUAL. Sorry, they aren’t. People that keep talking about them like they are only for enjoyment and using the phrases used in this article continue to reinforce that negative perception of nursing in public.
Also, why would someone have to “admit” to feeding their 3 year old? That’s like saying someone “admitted” to eating dinner…. you make it sound like it’s such a bad thing. It’s very disheartening.
Please re-evaluate your word choices.
I agree that the wording should not have been written that way, even if the author was being “tongue-in-cheek” or sarcastic about it. We as NIP moms have to put up with a lot just to be able to breastfeed in public, and even though it was meant as sarcasm, articles written like this only lend themselves to the struggle, and not in a good way.
Quoting Caitlin
While I love that this is getting some publicity/awareness, I don’t love the way you’ve worded it on the site: “committing this crime,” “guilty of,” “commit this act,” etc. Feeding your child is hardly a crime… even in public. Calm down, People. I’m pretty sure the author used the term “committing a crime” in a sarcastic manner. The author was only furthering the point that’s it’s not only a crime but totally normal. The article is a positive one, I think.
These are beautiful pictures – thank you for posting them. Next time, however, these and other nursing moms would probably appreciate it if you didn’t use phrases like Mayim Bialik “admits” to breast feeding and Gwen Stefani is “guilty” of it. It’s not a dirty little secret, it’s feeding their children!
Go, mamas, go!
Great article, funny, very tongue in cheek. I do find it interesting that Miranda is nursing in red high heels…..I mean, I always bring out my black patent leather stilettos when I nurse my baby, Not the red ones.
Awesome photos. I went with the assumption that the author was being satirical with the “crime” comments, especially since he or she chose such beautiful pictures. Lovely to see famous people nursing in public, since they can and do influence public opinion. As a fellow public nurser, thanks!
I LOVE the pic of Maggie nursing. it looks so normal.
I understand the attitude of the “crimes” committed being a joke, but yet I also understand. The fact they’ve been caught with their boob out is no more different than when I got caught with my boob out. Several times.
The pictures are beautiful! The natural and best way to feed your baby. We should all feel comfortable to breastfeed our babies for as long as your children and Moms feel we need/want to, in public or not! If it takes photos of celebs to get the word out, so let it be! We have the right to breastfeed anywhere!
Seriously, the photos and concept of this piece is great, but the captions are amateur hour. Words MATTER.
I absolutely loved the candid photo of Maggie and Mayim. As a woman who plan.s on letting her child self wean its nice to see some one else in the world NIPs with their toddler too! My son is only 2 but I get some weird stares.
Most of you people must have been sleeping in class the day they taught you about using the quotation marks to indicate sarcastic use of a word or phrase. The author is not claiming it to be a criminal act but sarcastically using the phrase in opposition of what others have claimed it to be. Give the poor author a break.
I am disgusted with the language in this article. This was written by one seriously uneducated author. Trying to criminalize feeding babies in public, or what?! Get a grip, there is nothing shameful about mothers nursing their babies in view of others. Babies cant go hungry just because you’re afraid of boobs!
This is the most stupid article ever. Just take a look at the pictures, they are just of mothers holding their children!! The only photo which even shows any flesh is the one of Maggie Gyllenhaal. Really, how is this even relevant? Get a life…
How is it that seeing these women in sexy revealing clothes in movies and magazines is considered normal, but if they show a half inch of boob to nourish a child it’s considered scandalous? Anyone who sees these photos in a negative light has their priorities messed up. These women are pictured at their most beautiful. Good for them for setting the breast is best example!
I got that the captions were sarcastic and meant as a joke, but they still came across as pretty off putting.
The article may have been intended as tongue in cheek and pro breastfeeding but that is not how it reads, anyone not pro nip who reads this will have their opinion reinforced by all the negative words used. I’m not happy with the wording of this article at all
I totally encourage breastfeeding but I think that there is a right way and wrong way to do it. At least cover yourself when you are doing it that is what causes people to make such a big deal of it. Also it may make some women uncomfortable and some children to see that.
Im all for breastfeeding but seriously a 3 year old. What does he come home from pre school asking for cookies and boob.
Way to go! Celebrity women are such a model for American girls (and beyond) in so many ways and this is a truly positive role. Thanks so much for not hiding something so beautiful, natural, and loving.
I think the author said “committing the crime” due to the bad rap breast feeding in public has gotten lately.
Brianne, that is how I was writing it. I am not judging anyone or making a stance on the matter. That’s why I put “committing the crime” in quotes, because a lot of people feel it is a “crime.” I’m loving all the comments. Keep the debate going!
I think these women have pretty much said it all. I can’t believe children would feel uncomfortable seeing a mother breastfeeding her baby. And if a woman is with a child who questions this, she can say, “The mommy is feeding her baby now, cause she’s hungry.” That really is the point. The baby is hungry and the mother feeds him or her. How does the mom know? Because her breast lets down milk when the child cries from hunger or when it’s time for the child to feed. Besides the fact that milk leaks all over if mothers don’t breastfeed their babies when it’s time.
Caught “committing a crime”???! For God’s sake, they are feeding their babies the most superior nutrition they can!! It’s not anything sexual, it’s the most natural thing in the world. Those people who get so hung up on it are who make it into a bigger deal than it is. Whoever wrote this is clearly not a mother, and probably not even a woman! Big deal, people–get over it!!
It’s fine and encouraging to see a woman feeding a baby/toddler/child whenever/wherever they’re hungry. I do question why Tori Spelling’s husband felt he needed to put his wife’s breasts out there on the internet since it appears to be a photo taken in private. And as for Maggie Gyllenhaal, she could have worn more appropriate clothing to nip. I completely support her right to bf wearing whatever she wants and to not care who’s watching, but, since I appreciate looking at breasts, I also reserve the right to stare at that much breast exposed to the whole world.
The world-wide average age for weaning a child is 4 years old (countries like Mongolia go even longer!) so Maggie, Mayim and whomever else chooses to nurse their children full term (vs. premature weaning) is doing a normal, awesome, beneficial act.
If you think breastfeeding (even a toddler or young child!) is perverted, you’re the pervert. The End.
Great to see Mums breastfeeding in public – need more of it to make breasfeeding “normal” and accepted and increase the rate it is occuring. However the wording in this article is not helping the cause -
no shame
“committing the crime”
getting in on the action
caught breastfeeding in public!
Were you trying to be funny? Didn’t work I am afraid!
Why is the only photo referred to as “beautiful” the one of the model breastfeeding her baby while fully made up and wearing red high heels? Appalling. They are all beautiful.
Admitted? Caught in the act? These mother’s are feeding their children, not doing anything sneaky. I bet a male wrote this who can’t get past a “boobie” needing to be exposed to breastfeed.GROW UP!
Why is it a crime to breastfeed? Are you making a joke about how ‘society’ AKA the press treat breastfeeding women as criminals? Or are you actually serious that these real mums with real bodies that do real human things like provide sustenance for their children that they really gave birth to via their real vaginas should feel guilty for, I dont know, being real?
If it is a joke or play on words you have not made it very clear, and as such a lot of these captions come off as sounding like you see their actions as criminal. I guess you have already figured that out based on how many angry comments you have under this post, and yet you have failed to update the post to either make your pun/play on words clearer- or made a clear statement expressing your views on the subject.
I think this article is TERRIBLE… the language that you used to describe the breastfeeding is totally inapropiate: “commiting the crime”, “is guilty of”… i don’t understand what crime or guilty of what!!!!
These wemen are feeding their children and they are giving them de healthiest choice possible!!!!!!!
Shame on you for your aproach and choice of words!
It is beautiful to see these moms’ living example of breastfeeding as the normal way to feed and comfort a child – which it most certainly is. For it to be described as a crime is a sad reflection on our society’s unhealthy and mixed up values.
I like that the pictures are getting lots of attention, but please, as I can see has already been said several times: it’s not “committing a crime” or “guilty of an act”. Come on. Yep…guilty of feeding their baby wherever they need to be fed. Tsk tsk.
Ah yes…it was written by a man, as someone above surmised. :O BOOBIEEEEEEEESSSSS!!!! Hide your eyes, gentlemen. It’s obscene.
Breast are for babies people!!! Grow up!!
