Of all the reality-TV casts out there, the Teen Mom crew (not to mention their 16 and Pregnant counterparts) is one of the most popular – and one that seems to bring out the worst critic in all of us.
Look at the Twitter accounts and Facebook pages of TMs like Leah Messer, Jenelle Evans, Maci Bookout, Chelsea Houska, Farrah Abraham and Catelynn Lowell – or even the comments on our Famecrawler posts! – and you’ll see a host of snarks, slams and holier-than-thou remarks on just about everything they do and say. Everything is fair game: their parenting skills, boyfriends, activities, tattoos and, of course, simply being teen mothers in the first place.
Recently, Kail Lowry (left) has been taking heat for openly saying she’s an atheist – as if her son Isaac is going to grow up to be a hardened criminal if he never sees the inside of a church. Puh-leeze.
Well, you know what? I don’t always agree with the things these young moms say and do, either, but I’m proud to say that in many ways, I’m exactly like them.
And you are, too, for that matter.
Why? Because we’re mothers, pure and simple. And from the minute that baby is placed in your arms, that identity colors your life forever, whether you’re 16 or 66. Sleepless nights, diaper rashes, tantrums, bedtime stories, homework, sloppy kisses, playgrounds – they’re all a part of the equation whether your life is documented on MTV or not.
So let’s take a moment to celebrate our similarities with the Teen Moms. They may be coming into the sisterhood of motherhood sooner than most of us did, but they’re still a part of our team.
