Eddie Fisher was one of the most talented and popular singers on the 1950’s, selling millions of records and even having his own TV show. Fisher passed away on Wednesday after complications from hip surgery. Here are a few facts about one of Hollywood’s original pop superstar;
He was no stranger to scandal
Fisher married actress Debbie Reynolds in 1955 and they quickly became billed as America’s Favorite Couple’. However, when Reynolds best friend, Elizabeth Taylor, lost her husband in a plane crash, Fisher stepped up to comfort her. They ended up having an affair and Fisher divorced Reynolds and married Taylor.
He Was a Military Man
After being drafted in 1951 to the U.S. Army, Fisher was sent to Texas for basic training. He served one year, from 1952 1953 in Korea where he was the official vocal soloist for the United States Army Band.
He was one of the 1950’s Most Popular Singers
Between 1950 and 1956 Fisher had 17 songs on the Top 40 music chart and 35 songs in the top 40.
He has 2 Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Fisher has not one, but two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has one for recording at 6241 Hollywood Boulevard, and one for television, at 1724 Vine Street.
He was Married 5 Times!
Fisher was married 5 times and had 4 children. His first marriage to Debbie Reynolds lasted from 1955 1959 and produced daughter Carrie and son Todd. He was then married to Taylor from 1959 1964 when she left him for Richard Burton. He married Connie Stevens in 1967, had 2 daughters, Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher before they divorced in 1969. He went on to wed Terry Richard in 1975 but that marriage only lasted 10 months, before marrying Betty Lin in 1993. The two were married until 2001.
Fisher broke his hip on September 9th and passed away on September 22nd from complications due to hip surgery.
