Eco-Chic! 6 Celebrity Parents Who Have Gone Green

It’s been said before but I’ll say it again…green is the new black. Being eco-friendly and conscious of our environment has never been as chic, stylish and in fashion as it is today. And many celebrities are leading the pack all the way to the recycling bin. Some of them have a vested interest in making sure the world is a healthy and sustainable environment. One reason? Because they have kids. And those kids of theirs will be inheriting the earth. As a parent it’s our job to not only try to improve the world but to set an example for our offspring. Whether it’s making sure their kids are raised green or just buying their child a earth friendly message tee, here are 6 celebrity and their kids who are are embracing Mother Earth.

Nicole Richie

With all her Boho style, she had better embrace some of the hippy tree hugger ways that it seems to represent. A pal of hers told Life & Style that Nicole “is obsessed with doing everything she can to try to keep her children healthy and safe.” She has some “parenting rules” she adheres to such as Seventh Generation which makes nontoxic- chlorine free diapers. She said that, “we don’t use baby wipes we use cloth with water.” Nicole believes that cell phones could be damaging to her kids little noggins so she won’t let cell phones too close to her kids. And not only does she do her shopping at Whole Foods and goes totally organic, but she supposedly has a vegetable garden and uses the bounty for the family’s dinners.

Alyson Hannigan -
The ex- Buffy alum and How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan shows her greenness with her choice of diapers. She doesn’t use any everyday disposable diaper for daughter Satyana. She opted to go with gDiapers that are an earth friendly alternative and can even be composted. She said of the cloth diapers: “We use gDiapers, a hybrid — it’s cloth on the outside and there’s a liner that you can compost, but if you don’t, it biodegrades in three months, not years. We go to the farmers market all the time. We’re putting in an organic garden to grow things I can’t get at the farmers market. Besides produce such as strawberries and blueberries that I just want to have, we’ll do unusual lettuces and a particular kind of cucumber and a lot of different herbs.”

Gwyneth Paltrow-
Her site Goop is pretty much Gwyneth’s mantra for her environmentally healthy living lifestyle. Her musings aim to “nourish the inner aspect.” Her family eats organic foods, additive —free items and she herself tries to get lots of sleep.

Brad Pitt —
Brad love architecture. He loves architecture a lot. And he was able to take his passion, his money and his name and do something not just generous but also very very green. The superstar went and built energy efficient “eco-homes” built from all sustainable materials for the Hurricane Katrina survivors in New Orleans. His goal was to build 150 homes and he also pledged to match up to $5 million in donations from his own money.

Sheryl Crow-
Sheryl Crow not only is an activist, does the college tours to spread the word on global warming but she also drives a hybrid car, has solar panels on her home and “preaches” about only using cold water to clean her clothes.

Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz
Before her daughter was even born, Ana had plans on having a green baby. She stated:

“My daughter’s just going to be really hip! My goal is to be as eco-conscious as possible: There’s so much out there for parents who want to do that. I plan to keep her eco-friendly as she gets older.

I think we all sort of have to do it. I’m lucky enough to be able to do it, so we just have to drive the market toward it so it becomes more possible to make and more accessible to consumers.

People will realize how much easier and better it is to be local and organic. But it’s just not available to everyone right now.”

Do are raising your kids green?
