J.R. Martinez is “over the moon.” Why? It’s not because he’s been inspiring thousands with his motivational speaking and story, not because he not only competed but actually won Dancing with the Stars but because of something that will really change his life. He and girlfriend Diana Jones are expecting their first child!

The happy couple will be welcoming a baby girl this Spring. Now, we all saw J.R. Martinez on Dancing with the Stars but what about the rest of his life and how he came to be where he is today?

    JR was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on June 14th, 1983. His mother Maria Zavala and he never met his father. He had two sisters (one had passed away) but they were raised in El Salvador with his mother's family.

    J.R. Joins the Army
    He enlisted in the army in 2002, went through training and became a 11B Infantryman. In 2003 he was assigned to Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.

    His Accident
    In February 2003, he was sent to the middle east to fight in the Iraq war. After just two month he was a casualty. He was serving as a driver of a Humvee when the front tie of the car hi an IED. He sustained very severe burn to over 40% of his body. He sent almost three years at a Army Medical Center and had 33 different cosmetic surgeries and skin grafts.

    Motivational Speaking
    By the urging of a nurse at the hospital he began helping other patients in the hospital , sharing his story and listening to theirs. Thus began his calling as a motivational speaker. He has since spoken all over the country to a wide variety of groups from corporations to vet groups to schools.

    In 2008 he was cast in the soap opera All My Children in the role of Brot Monroe, who was a character who had served in the U.S. Army in Iraq and was injured in combat.

    In 2011 he competed in Dancing with the Stars and he and partner Karina Smirnoff won the whole thing!
