A Social Media Guide for Celebrity Parents (and Really All of Us)

Last year Dean McDermott tweeted a photo that seemed innocent enough of his son Liam. But there was something going on in the background, his wife Tori Spellings’ boobs. On the right side of the frame, Tori’s breasts were clearly visible. But Tori forgave her Twitter happy hubby telling CNN, “It’s like, what am I going to do? I am a mom, I was nursing my baby. [Dean] was so devastated about it that I couldn't be mad. I mean it was genuinely an accident.”

50 Cent made quite a faux pas when he recently tweeted a response to a follower saying, “Yeah just saw your picture fool you look autistic.” This did not sit well with the general public and especially parents. High profile autism activists like Holly Robinson Peete lashed back. She wrote in an open letter to 50 Cent, “Do you even know what autism is? And what exactly does “autistic” look like? Do you know how wildly prevalent autism is? 1 in 88 have it. That’s 1 in 54 boys. Families suffer a social stigma you will never know. It is a financial and emotional drain for millions...” 50 Cent later apologized for his tacky tweet, but this just shows, think before you tweet people!

Kendra Wilkinson is a sex symbol, so it makes sense that she would bring the sexy into her tweets as well. She once tweeted, “Henry Baskett u horny devil. I just wanna go to sleep. Damnit. Well ok. Hahahahahaha.” And that is just one of many. If you want to send sexy tweets to your significant other just text it to them or tell them in person, you needn’t share with hundreds of thousands of followers online.

Seven-year-old boys love a fart joke, but the rest of us? Not as much. It’s just not classy (that is unless you spell classy with a K). While knocked up, Jessica Simpson tweeted, “The average pregnant woman farts 15 times that!" after retweeted the OMG Facts quote, “The average person expels flatulence 15 times a day!”

Apparently, Charlie Sheen had wanted to chat with Justin Bieber (and no, we have NO idea why). Charlie tweeted out to the Bieb his cell phone number with the message , “Call me bro.” He apparently thought he was sending a direct message. Oops. And the number 310-954-7277 has since been disconnected.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, unless you tweet about it. Brandi Glanville of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills crossed off an item on her “bucket list” by getting hitched (although not legally) in Las Vegas to her BFF Darin Harvey and posted pictures on Twitter. But it was all for naught, they never did tie the knot.

Some things, like private domestic matter should just stay private, even if you are a reality star and sharing your life is how you make your living. If you are using social media as a tool, make sure you use the RT function properly or else it may just seem that you are REALLY into yourself. Taylor Armstrong of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills tweeted, “Reading @TaylorArmstrong's amazing new book!" she tweeted. "She is such an inspiration to me and to other women! Thank you so much!! Xo."” Doh!

Yes, we know that Words With Friends is addictive, but celebrity or not, one should listen to the flight attendants and just turn the phone off. Alec Baldwin famously lashed out on Twitter after a flight saying, “Words W Friends: Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving. #nowonderamericaairisbankrupt.”

People who follow you on Twitter feel like they have a special connection to you. You are sharing your thoughts, tasks and moments from your day. But many a time a celebrity isn’t the one doing the tweeting, they have “people” who do it for them. But sometimes it becomes plainly obvious that it isn’t the celebrity doing the tweeting, like Kourtney Kardashian promoting her show while in labor. Yeah, I doubt she took the time mid contraction to tweet.
