Adorable! Tori Spelling's Daughter Hattie Chooses Her First Birthday Cake!Shana Aborn
A child’s first birthday is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, so parents know they have to do it right!
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott came up with a clever idea for daughter Hattie‘s first birthday on October 10. Taking a chapter from the popular cooking shows, they held a birthday cake bake-off.
Both expert bakers, they each designed and created a unique confection for the big day. The judge: none other but the birthday girl herself, of course; whichever cake she touched first would be declared the winner.
Dean went with a Mad Hatter cake in honor of the Alice in Wonderland theme they’d already planned for her party. He created a hat-shaped cake covered in purple frosting and accessorized with the traditional size tag.
Tori created a towering four-layer cake. Oldest children Liam and Stella chose the colors for each layer: purple, yellow and two different shades of pink. After stacking the layers carefully together, Tori piped on bands of aqua, purple, hot pink and light pink frosting. (Check out the bakers in action on Tori’s website, ToriSpelling.com.)
Finally, the creations were ready to be presented to the discerning judge. Dean had his video camera in hand and caught the entire cute moment!

Yes, it was a tough call, but in the end, it was Dad’s cake that captured Hattie’s fancy. However, the runner-up chef has no hard feelings.
“As you can see, it didn’t matter to us which cake Hattie chose,” Tori blogs. “We were all so happy to see the birthday girl having the best time – we were all winners in this cake-off!”
This year’s celebration was one of gratitude, as well: Not only do the McDermotts have a healthy new baby, Finn Davey, the kids have a healthy mom, too. Tori developed a life-threatening condition called placenta previa during her pregnancy and had to be monitored closely; then, only weeks after the birth, she had to be rushed back to the hospital because her c-sections stitches burst.
Wishing many more happy birthdays to Hattie, her siblings and her parents!
