An Iconic TV Mom is Gone: Bonnie Franklin of One Day at a Time Has DiedSunny Chanel
On Friday we lost one of TVs most iconic moms; Bonnie Franklin of One Day at a Time has died.
One Day at a Time was on the air from 1975 to 1984, enjoying a strong 9 year run. At the helm of the family on the show was Bonnie Franklin as Ann Romano, a divorced mother of two teenage girls – Julie (played by Mackenzie Phillips) and Barbara (played by Valerie Bertinelli).
The show was a the first of it’s kind, a groundbreaking program which chronicled (in a sitcom scenario) a feminist journey of a single divorced mom raising two her daughter’s on her own. Franklin spoke about the show during an reunion with the cast back in 2012. “The truth of the matter was…we were reflecting what was out there. It just hadn’t been on television before,” Franklin said. “You can do all these heavyweight subjects that are important, but you have got to do it with humor.”
Franklin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer back in September 2012 and she lost her battle with the disease six months later, passing away on March 1st.
Our thoughts are with her family, friends and fans.
