Andy Whitfield to leave Sparticus Due to Returning Cancer

Andy Whitfield, the star of Sparticus: Blood and Sand, is said to be leaving the series due to his battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

In a statement made earlier this week, the 36-year-old father of two announced, “It’s with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. [...] It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey.”

The Australian actor was first diagnosed in the spring, resulting in the production postponement of the second season of Sparticus. In June, Starz reportedly announced that their leading man had “responded well to treatment, and was returning to work.”

We hope that Whitfield and his family will find the strength to battle cancer once again.
