Tomorrow may be Election Day, but for Ann Romney, it’s really more like Labor Day!
At a recent rally for Mitt Romney in Ohio, the woman who would be First Lady told the crowd that being on the campaign trail is “very hard on families.” She noted that back in 2008, when her husband lost the Republican nomination to John McCain, she made a videotape for him saying, “Sweetie, I’m never doing this again.”
“He looked at it, he laughed, I said, ‘Why are you laughing?’,” said Mrs. Romney. “He said, ‘You say that after every pregnancy.’ True…true. And yet I have five boys.”
She was hoping that her final pregnancy might bring her a daughter, but after youngest son Craig was born, “I turned to Mitt and I’m like, ‘That’s all I got.’ There were no girls in my future, I could see that for sure.”
Mrs. Romney figured that the next generation of Romneys would even the score a bit. But, she laughs, the Y chromosome runs strong in the family. Of the 18 grandchildren her five sons have produced, only five are girls.
But, like any mom, Ann Romney is grateful for her family just the way it is. She said once in an interview that her sons have taught her more than daughters would. “They taught me to be real, to have no baloney and to just say it straight and then get over it. And that was a great lesson,” she said.
So if Mitt Romney’s bid for the White House proves unsuccessful tomorrow, will he take his hat out of the ring for good? Perhaps so…or perhaps he’ll prove to be the Jim Bob Duggar of politicians – continuing to go on despite the odds.
It won’t be long till we all find out the answer.
