Today is Ash Wednesday, which is the official beginning of Lent 2011 for the Catholic religion. Ash Wednesday’s meaning is an expression of repentance and mourning to God. Ashes burned from the palms on Palm Sunday of the previous year are placed on worshippers’ foreheads to show their devotion.
The Ash Wednesday fasting rules have evolved a bit over the course of time. Typically, people who follow the rules of Lent will fast by having one full meal during the day, plus a few smaller snacks. They refrain from eating meat, just as they do on every Friday during Lent.
Plenty of celebrities will be observing Lent 2011. Some famous Catholic names you will recognize include Nicole Kidman, Jim Calviezel, Ben Affleck, Sylvester Stallone, Christina Aguilera, and Celine Dion.
Part of Lent requires the faithful to give something up…wonder what these celebrities will be eliminating during Lent 2011?
