Bachelorette Emily Maynard - How Being a Single Mom Has Changed the ShowSunny Chanel
On Monday night the new season of the Bachelorette debuts. And this won’t be your regular old Bachelorette. This one as host Chris Harrison said – “is drastically different and much deeper from anything we’ve ever done.” The big reason? Returning Bachelorette Emily Maynard ain’t fancy free she has a six-year-old daughter at home.
Ricki is her six-year-old daughter by her late NASCAR-driver fiance, Ricky Hendrick, Emily has been raising Ricki as a single mom and had been on Bachelor Season 15, being the winner of Brad Womack’s heart. But the couple didn’t last. And now Emily is coming back to reality TV to meet a man.
There are several things that will be a transition from previous Bachelor/Bachelorette seasons. The difference will be felt at the get-go. “Her being a single mom definitely changed the tone from night one,” says Chris Harrison. “You don’t get to make decisions for yourself anymore. There was always that underlying issue of, ‘Is this guy ready [to be a parent]?’ It’s not just hopefully finding love at the end. [She] hopefully finds a husband and a father figure to Ricki. Emily is a strong, independent and traditional Southern woman but she’s exhausted. Because of the tragedy, she’s been in control since she was 19. She’s looking for a strong man to help her take her hands off the wheel.”
Another thing that’s different is that they didn’t film it as some mansion in the hills of Los Angeles. They shot the show where Emily lives her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. Emily didn’t want to disrupt her daughter’s life or have to pull her out of school to head out to Hollywood.
And Ricki seems to be enjoying it so far. “She is loving it, just everything that’s going on,” Maynard tells Zap2it about Ricki’s response to taping. “She doesn’t really know about ‘The Bachelor’ or ‘The Bachelorette.’ I tell her, ‘I’m going to work,’ but she’s getting a lot of attention. Everywhere we go, I’ve tried to bring her back something from the dates or whatever.”
But you won’t be seeing too much of Ricki on the show, “She’s not going to be involved in a lot of filming and certainly not meeting the guys. But she’s really excited to go on vacation with Mommy.”
The pacing will also be different. “My schedule is very different than a normal single guy’s schedule. I can’t go out every night of the week.” Emily said to People. “They just kind of fizz out before they ever have a chance to become anything. I have to take things slowly because I have a daughter, so that makes it really hard.”
