Bill and Giuliana Rancic Talk About Parenting and Staying Healthy!Shana Aborn
Many things have changed for Bill and Giuliana Rancic since having their baby boy, Edward Duke, last fall: sleepless nights, diaper changes and boundless love. “I don’t think we could love anyone else as much as we love this little guy,” Giuliana tells Babble.
Another change they’ve made is the way they approach cleanliness and health around their house. The couple recently partnered with Lysol’s Healthing initiative to help educate parents nationwide about the importance of keeping a clean environment for the sake of their family’s health. Recently, they visited YMCAs in several cities to discuss good hygiene and cleaning habits with parents and children alike.
Giuliana, who takes charge of the family’s housekeeping – “In our house, I do all the cleaning and Bill does all the cooking” – has become more conscious of the way she cleans since becoming a mom. “I always thought that ‘clean’ meant sparkling countertops, but it’s really about disinfecting,” she says. “Like a lot of moms, I think about what products we’re using. Sometimes you use certain products that just move the germs from one area to another. But now we’re cleaning more efficiently and wisely.”
The couple likes Lysol’s Power & Free Multipurpose Cleaner, a family-friendly bleach-free hydrogen peroxide formula. And Giuliana carries Lysol Disinfecting Wipes in Duke’s diaper bag to disinfect public changing tables, airplane armrests and other frequently-touched surfaces.
Little Duke is only seven months old and hasn’t had so much as a runny nose yet, reports his proud mom. But it won’t be long before he’s on the go and touching everything in sight. Bill and Giuliana plan to teach him healthy habits early – especially handwashing. “You have to instill [that habit] at a very young age,” says Bill. “You have to wash for at least 20 seconds – long enough to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice. Working at a restaurant, we know that food can carry a lot of bacteria. We’re very smart about sanitation at home.”
The Rancics have become more conscious about their health in other ways, too. Recently, Bill was diagnosed with high cholesterol levels, which he took as a wake-up call. “I’m a pretty active guy, but my diet needed some changes,” he says. “I’m going to change my eating habits and hopefully get the number down without [having to take] medication.” Speaking of eating, Bill reports that Duke eats just about everything now that he’s on solid food. “He gets that from me,” Bill says.
Fans know that Bill and Giuliana’s dream of becoming parents happened only after many months of trying and medical intervention. Are they planning to give Duke a sibling anytime soon? “I think we’re just trying to get him to sleep through the night first!” Giuliana laughs.
