Brand-New Mom Hilary Duff: I'm Figuring Out Motherhood!

Hilary Duff is learning the ropes of motherhood.

Oh, those first days of parenthood. Nothing like ’em. They’re giddy and frightening and exhausting and wonderful and sad and confusing. Heck, a new mom can run through all those emotions in just five minutes!

My own newbie-mom days were weepy and giggly and marked by frequent thoughts of What the heck have I gotten myself into? My husband wasn’t much better. We still laugh about the one panicked night we needed petroleum jelly for the infant thermometer. He ran to the nearest deli and asked the manager where it was – and for the life of him, he couldn’t think of the word “Vaseline.”

It’s an experience Hilary Duff is going through right now. Today marks her eighth day of motherhood – wow, little Luca Cruz is over a week old already! – and her tweets reflect the ups and downs and general craziness that occur once that little squirming bit of cuteness comes home from the hospital.

Just yesterday, her tweets went from a cheery post about how life had changed “in such a wonderful way” to a 4:00 AM bleary-eyed lament, “whew this job is no joke!”

But last night found her on the upswing again as she savored a treat that’s often hard for new parents to come by.

She went out to dinner with her friend Alisia Leibel, a California clothing designer. From the sound of things, the evening was fun and full of laughs.

“Omg my first outing in a week and I hit @AlisiaLeibel in the eye with a shrimp tail!” she tweeted. “Can’t take me anywhere! Lord help me!”

Of course, Hilary had to work her schedule around the baby, so she couldn’t make it a long night. Still, it got her out of the house and lifted her spirits considerably.

“1st outing complete with no tears!” she exclaimed triumphantly. (We have to ask: hers or Luca’s?) “Made it home early…just in time to feed Luca. figuring this motherhood thing out! Yay! A grown up din! ;)”

That’s the spirit, Hilary! Hope she gets to enjoy many more evenings like that one. They help make up for all the fast-food outings and Chuck E. Cheese birthday parties. Plus, they remind a mom that she does have an identity other than diaper-changer and on-call nurse.

No tweets from her yet this morning. Do you think she might have found a moment for a nap? (Hope so!)
