Following an unannounced visit by former President Bill Clinton, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has pardoned imprisoned American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee and ordered their release.
Ling, 32, and Lee, 36, reporters for former Vice President Al Gore’s Current TV, were accused of crossing into North Korea from South Korea illegally in March and engaging in “hostile acts.” After their conviction in June they were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor.
This is no doubt joyous news for the families of Ling and Lee. Ling, the younger sister of TV journalist and former View co-host Lisa Ling, is married; Lee is married and has a 4-year old daughter, Hana. As a parent I can’t imagine being away from my child for that long, and I’m sure the reunion between mother and daughter is going to be so sweet.
Best wishes to their families on this happy, happy day.
