After the birth of my daughter, I was amazed how quickly the the pounds melted off. I’m still struggling (six years later) with a bit on a paunch, but the main girth I had gained during my pregnancy disappeared quite quickly. And in my mind I had one big aspect of my postpartum life to thank for the decrease in my size, the breastfeeding of my daughter.
Breastfeeding being credited for post baby weight loss is something that the experts agree on. “A breastfeeding mom can burn [as much as] 500 calories per day,” Kirsty Bobrow, a clinical researcher at the University of Oxford, said. “That’s an hour on a treadmill, or [it's] sitting in a rocking chair and giving baby breast milk, which has all kinds of benefits.” Even the United States government is promoting breastfeeding as a weight loss strategy, “Women who breastfeed exclusively for more than 3 months tend to lose more weight than those who do not. Those who continue breastfeeding beyond 4-6 months may continue to lose weight.”
Many a celebrity mom proclaim that breastfeeding had a big impact on shedding the baby weight while a few claim it’s just a myth. See what stars like Beyonce to Snooki had to say about it here.
