I strongly believed that Bristol Palin did not deserve her spot in the “Dancing With the Stars” final based on her dancing ability (inability), but I admire her as a person for standing up for herself and enduring an absurd amount of criticism over a TV show. And now I like her even more after seeing that she called out Kathy Griffin for telling a Bristol Palin fat joke while hosting “VH1’s Divas Salute the Troops” over the weekend.
Griffin, wearing a bikini, called Bristol, a mom of one, “the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight.” When that joke elicited boos, Griffin followed up, “She gained like 30 pounds a week,” Griffin shouted over the crowd. “I swear to God, it was fantastic. She’s like the white Precious.'”
Wow, a swipe at Bristol AND Gabourey Sidibe? I think both their weights are none of our business, just like a person’s sexual orientation, as Griffin herself would surely agree. I’m not sure why people are so fascinated by this. If I was getting as much criticism as Bristol got on “Stars,” I’d be stuffing myself with Oreos 24/7 for consolation, and I think we can all agree that Bristol didn’t look like she’d been doing that. I think she was at a disadvantage because, as a non-performer, she did not carry herself as confidently as the others and her slouchiness was not flatter. But fat? Hardly.
Bristol responded to Griffin on her Facebook page: “The audience’s reaction to this ‘comedian’ spoke volumes, and the decent people I know would probably have booed her, too.”
What do you think should Griffin have said that?
