“Glee” creator Ryan Murphy should be giving other TV shows lessons in realistic mother-daughter casting (we mean you, “Desperate Housewives”). First he cast Idina Menzel as Lea Michele’s mom, and you can totally see the resemblance. Now he’s cast Carol Burnett as Jane Lynch’s mom, and darned if they don’t look a surprising amount alike.
Lynch plays Sue Sylvester, the cheerleading coach who delivers the most biting put-downs in primetime this side of Simon Cowell.
Continue reading to find out Burnett’s character’s backstory.
Burnett will play Sue’s Nazi hunting mom (she mentioned her a couple times last season), and I bet there’s a juicy story there. In her rare tender moments, Sue has shown how much she cares for her sister, who has special needs, and she’s implied that her parents weren’t always there to help out.
Of course mostly it’s just a chance to watch two of the best comedic actresses out there trade jabs as mom and daughter when the episode airs in October or November.
Menzel and Michele had an awesome mother-daughter duet last season with “Poker Face.”
We already know Burnett can sing (sort of) from the 1982 film “Annie,” so here’s a suggestion for a duet with Lynch: “Funny Girl.”
What do you think they should sing? Leave a note in the comments section.
