Singer and actress Jill Scott is getting ready to release her first album in four years titled “The Light of the Sun” and she recently sat down to talk with Ebony magazine about motherhood, her career, and losing 50 pounds.
Jill and then-drummer for her band, Lil’ John Roberts had their child on April 20, 2009. The couple, engaged at the time, welcomed a son, Jett Hamilton Roberts. Just two months later in June, Jill announced that she and Roberts had broken up.
Jill says of the break up that she hopes for both parents to have an active part in their child’s upbringing and stated that “We definitely love our son and we are co-parenting and working on being friends. It is what it is. I have a lot of support, so I want for nothing as far as that’s concerned.”
Jill tells Ebony, which she appears on the June cover, that she’s in a good place and enjoying motherhood: “I’m past caring about some things that never mattered in the first place and [I’m] in love with my baby boy. I’m also unafraid. I know how much music has always meant to me, how much it means to us all, and I know there’s someone out there, maybe just one someone, who can feel inspired by being brave.”
The singer recently dropped more than 50 pounds, and is now smaller than she’s been in 20 years. How did she do it? She says she found a trainer who didn’t make exercising feel like it was exercising.
“Anything that makes me feel like I’m not working out. We go outside and throw footballs, go for walks.”
I’m the same way! Once I hear “work out” or the word “exercise,” I have a million excuses for why I can’t do it. But ask me to take a walk and I love to! For many of us, getting fit is more of a mind game then anything; don’t you agree?
