Brittany Murphy’s mother, Sharon, and husband Simon Monjack started a charity after her death to support arts education for children. The Brittany Murphy Foundation began soliciting donations last month through its website. But there’s a big problem — it’s not legal.
The organization was never registered as a nonprofit and there is no such note on its website as required by law. After TMZ discovered this, the website was taken down “for maintenance” and later a note was posted on the site indicating the foundation would return all contributions until official nonprofit status was achieved. Rumors in Hollywood have long portrayed Monjack as somewhat of a con man. This major gaffe certainly won’t help his reputation.
