You couldn’t help getting choked up last night when Milwaukee “American Idol” auditioner Chris Medina demonstrated the true meaning of love, explaining that he stayed with his brain-damaged fiance Juliana Ramos after her car accident. But was I the only one who felt like “Idol” was being exploitive by wheeling out Juliana Ramos to meet the judges after Chris Medina sang? Like some producer was saying “this is going to make a great TV moment?”
I realize it’s a reality show, and exploitation is part of the game. But to me the moment turned something sweet and amazing into something gimmicky as the judges clambered around Ramos. Watching Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson shake her hand just felt uncomfortable, though Steven Tyler came across as real and sincere when he told Juliana that Chris Medina’s “American Idol” performance only worked because he was singing to her. Tyler is really becoming the stand-out judge.
What did you think was it a nice moment or did it seem too engineered for the cameras?
