Chris Medina: Did Idol Exploit His Brain-Damaged Fiance, Juliana Ramos?

Chris Medina brings fiance Juliana Ramos to meet the "American Idol" judges

You couldn’t help getting choked up last night when Milwaukee “American Idol” auditioner Chris Medina demonstrated the true meaning of love, explaining that he stayed with his brain-damaged fiance Juliana Ramos after her car accident. But was I the only one who felt like “Idol” was being exploitive by wheeling out Juliana Ramos to meet the judges after Chris Medina sang? Like some producer was saying “this is going to make a great TV moment?”

I realize it’s a reality show, and exploitation is part of the game. But to me the moment turned something sweet and amazing into something gimmicky as the judges clambered around Ramos. Watching Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson shake her hand just felt uncomfortable, though Steven Tyler came across as real and sincere when he told Juliana that Chris Medina’s “American Idol” performance only worked because he was singing to her. Tyler is really becoming the stand-out judge.

What did you think – was it a nice moment or did it seem too engineered for the cameras?

These people are close personal friends of mine. They do not feel exploited as some of the blogs are inferring this am. They have a Facebook page For Julianna that has given almost daily updates on her recovery long before the American Idol auditions were thought of. I don’t agree with this exploitation theory at all! Yes, it did make a good TV moment, but I don’t feel that anyone was being taken advantage of in any way. It seems apparent that Chris wanted Juliana to be there and wanted her to meet the judges, and I believe that Juliana also wanted to be there and was probably very happy to be brought in to meet the judges. I bet that alot more good will come of their appearance on American Idol than you might expect. Millions of people now know about this story who didn’t know about it before. Many will now visit their websites to show support and follow the story, and many will make donations to Juliana’s fund which I’m sure will help greatly. I’m sure some people will accuse Chris Medina of playing a “sympathy card” but I’m not one of them. He clearly has talent and loves to perform, and I think he will rely on his musical talent to get him through the competition. However, there’s nothing wrong with the story of Chris & Juliana being shared with the public, and I do think it is a very significant story of love.
