Matt Lauer gave Christie Brinkley The Business on TODAY yesterday morning.
The supermodel mom was on the morning show ostensibly to talk about her role in the upcoming Chicago musical but Lauer launched a full scale interrogation about Brinkley’s ongoing child support war with ex-husband, Peter Cook.
On the one hand, Lauer is totally right in trying to call out two adults who have been acting ridiculous for four years. Calling the divorce during which Brinkley and Cook have traded seriously harsh blows a “poisonous atmosphere” Lauer reminds Brinkley she has kids with Cook who are old enough to understand what’s going on.
“What impact is this having on the children?” Lauer asks.
“My son doesn’t want to go there anymore so my son has been with me for the past seven months”. Brinkley responds.
The couple have two children together. Jack Paris Brinkley (who is Brinkley’s son from previous marriage that Cook later adopted) and Sailor Lee Cook. The children became a focus of public attention during the divorce when the former model contended that Cook used “overwhelming” physical force when unhappy with or disciplining the children
Yesterday Brinkley said Peter Cook is “late paying his child support which is very minimal… he pays $600 a month per child and that’s it! It’s a very minimal amount of money.”
Cook and Brinkley have famously called each other narcissists. Brinkley insists it’s Cook who has the problem.
“I think that we need to have legislation protects a family from a spouse been diagnosed by a court appointed forensic psychologist as a bonafide malignant or extreme narcissist. This is a personality disorder!”
“How can the two of you make it better for the children?” Matt asks.
Brinkley says the only answer she has is that she and Cook have a no contact order. That’s when she breaks down she says “I just want peace! I just want peace for my family.”
Cook has subsequently called Brinkley’s breakdown “a cunning and shameless attempt to garner public sympathy“.
“Christie was entirely dishonest about the circumstances surrounding the current court action which was precipitated by her and … is doing further damage to our children,” the 53-year-old architect continued on blasting Brinkley. “I am also shocked by the blatant lies she told regarding our divorce proceedings of four years ago, including denying the indisputable fact that she fought for an open courtroom despite the warnings it would harm our children.”
You can see the dramatic video below. What do you think? Did Lauer go too far? And whose the real narcissist? Brinkley or Cook?
