Finally, one of the great mysteries of our time (well of the last week), has been answered. We now know who the Ryder Cup Cigar Guy is. His name is Rupesh Shingadia and as our EBrady reported, he is a 30-year-old investment banker who lives with his parents in South London. And his 15-minutes of fame has been quite a shock to this mild mannered man. There was a nationwide man-hunt for the Cigar Man. But people really didn’t care who he was but rather why he was wearing that red wig and chewing on a great big cigar. And we now know!
His costume was in tribute to the Spanish golfer Miguel Angel Jimenez. He said, “I wanted to do something to show my support for the European team and I thought of Miguel,” said the Cigar Guy. “These days sportsmen have become devoid of character. But Miguel does his own thing and I love the way he walks around the course with a cigar clamped between his teeth.”
And what does he think about all this random and rabid attention? He told the Daily Mail that, “I am embarrassed and overwhelmed,’ he said in the exclusive interview. Never in a million years could I have expected anything like this, ” adding, “it is truly surreal.” I wonder what his parents must think of all this?!?
