The traditional, old-fashioned way a family is made goes something like this. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl get married. Girl gets pregnant. Boy and girl have baby. But that’s not the way things work anymore. There are all sorts of arrangements, procedures, and non-traditional family units and the ones that get the most attention? Those of celebrities. Here are five celebrities who opted to use a surrogate for their children.
The 25-year-old Real Madrid star just became a father. The details are still murky but the rumors are that he fathered a child with a San Diego based surrogate and he paid her a handsome sum to keep mum and to give him full guardian rights.
Michael Jackson, the dearly departed King of Pop married Deborah Rowe in 1996 and bore two children for Michael Jackson, Prince and Paris. But all accounts seem to represent the relationship as one of convenience. One where Michael got kids and Deborah got cash, and lots of it…about $8 million dollars plus a house in Beverly Hills. His third child, Blanket, was born to a surrogate whose identity is still unknown.
Sarah Jessica Parker:
Wanting to add to their family, Sarah Jessica Parker and her hubby Matthew Broderick looked to a surrogate for their twins Marion and Tabitha. But the process was not trouble free, the surrogate’s computer was hacked, her telephone bugged and two local policeman allegedly attempted to break into her house for dirt on the surrogate to sell.
Instead of going through the long and arduous process of adopting, Ricky Martin opted to use a surrogate for the birth of his twin boys Valentino and Matteo. The pop star also decided to announce to the world that he was gay and was inspired to be honest of who he was because keeping it secret would “diminish the glow that my kids were born with”.
Dennis Quaid and wife Kimeberly used a gestational carrier (“a woman who carries another couple’s baby conceived by the parents’ own egg and sperm”). The couple who said the “Go has definitely blessed us” welcomed twins Thomas and Zoe in 2007.
Other celebrities who opted to use a surrogate? Joan Lunden and husband Jeff Konigsberg, Angela Bassett and husband Courtney B. Vance and Katy Sagal and husband Kurt Sutter.
