The CWG opening ceremony video showcased an exciting array of Indian culture and tradition as the Commonwealth Games (CWG 2010) got off to a good start yesterday following some controversy. Father of two Prince Charles was on hand to represent his mother and receive the queen’s baton, which was handed over by Indian world wrestling champion Sushil Kumar. The baton had been taken from London last year and toured throughout India by relay runners.
Charles called the opening “splendid,” and he wasn’t the only big name there. Sheila Dikshit, Delhi chief minister, and fellow politician Jaipal Reddy were also on hand for the colorful ceremony. The dazzling CWG opening included an amazing 7,000 artists, and it included fireworks and puppetry.
There had been some complaints earlier this summer about the construction of the athletes’ village that left the start of the games in some question. But things got off without a hitch yesterday.
