Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died today during the IndyCar Series finale in Las Vegas.
Wheldon was involved in a car accident early on in the race, after a multiple car pile-up that involved 15 drivers (video). He was airlifted to the hospital, but did not survive the crash.
INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernhard shared the sad news, noting, “INDYCAR is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries.”
The race was canceled and the remaining drivers drove a five-lap tribute to Wheldon.
Dan Wheldon was just 33 years old and leaves behind a wife and two sons, Sebastian, 2, and Oliver, six months.
Sad day for racing fans.
