DWTS’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Karina Smirnoff Split…Why?

Dancing With The Stars’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy, 29 and Karina Smirnoff, 31, split a few days ago, after being engaged since New Year’s Day.  What went wrong in their relationship?

A soure close to Smirnoff said, “They both knew when they had been spending more time together recently things weren’t going so well.  She’s not devastated but it obviously hurts, she’s angry.  She’ll always love him and respect him but she always knew in heart of hearts from the beginning of their relationship that he wasn’t the one for her.”

Their biggest disagreement?  Babies.

Another pal added, “Maks was ready to start a family and have children with Karina, and he came to realize that wasn’t really what she wanted.  He’s just heartbroken things didn’t work out.  He’ll always respect Karina.”

Their families were not thrilled about their engagement either.  “His family did not want him to marry her,” said a source close to Chmerkovskiy.

They added, “Even her family thought he may not even be the one.  They think it worked out for the best.  She knows she needs to take time to focus on herself and not jump into situations.  She wants to focus on work and she’ll be fine.”

That’s hard – when a couple have differing points of view about children and starting a family.  It’s difficult to overcome if they are totally opposite on what they want.  Better to find out now though, before they married.

Chmerkovskiy and Smirnoff will still work together for DWTS‘s ninth season, premiering September 21, on ABC.
