Dara Torres Is a Mom on a Mission: In Training for the 2012 Olympics (Video)

dara torres Watch out world Dara Torres is back in the pool!

Five-time Olympian Dora Torres officially announced that she is training for the 2012 Olympics during an on Live With Regis and Kelly.   Torres recently hit the pool after taking a year off to recover from reconstructive knee surgery and made the decision to try to make the team for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“I am 43 years old,” Torres said, “but that’s not the announcement.  The announcement is that I just started training for the 2012 Olympics.”

Torres already holds the title of the only American swimmer to qualify for five Olympic teams and the oldest simmer (male or female) to compete for the Americans.

“A lot of people made the fact that my age was such a big deal and I think that completely worked to my advantage,” Torres said of competing in Beijing. “I surrounded myself with good coaches and trainers. I knew what to do about nutrition. The thing about any elite athlete is they have to be so careful about what they put in their bodies because of drug tests. I especially get tested all the time. It’s scary, I can’t use Visine.”

In making the decision to return to competitive training, Dara wanted it to be on her own terms as a 40-something woman with a 4-year-old daughter.

“I wanted to get back into swimming on my terms,” Torres said. “I just started training with the kids again and they are all giving me grief and teasing me. I have huge goggles and they asked me if windshield wipers come with them.”

It’s not a given that she’ll make the team, but if history is a measure Torres will be difficult to stop and she’s realistic about the obstacles facing her the sixth time around.

It’s going to be fun being back again,” Torres said. “It depends on what my body dictates. I know that I am more susceptible to injury. Now that I’m a little bit older, it’s going to be even harder than when I was 41.”

But as a mother of a toddler, Dara can certainly teach the ‘kids’ a thing or two about life’s challenges!

Do you think Dara will make the team or is it time to turn in her goggles?
