Demi Lovato’s estranged dad Patrick is speaking out and blaming the pressures of Hollywood for his daughter’s problems.
When he first spoke to RadarOnline.com, he made comments which resulted in outrage from his ex-wife and Disney. But he’s not backing down.
“This is the United States of America, I can talk anytime I want to,” Patrick said when asked about reports he was warned by Disney’s lawyers and Demi’s mother, Dianna, to stop talking about his daughter’s personal affairs. Legal threats have not stopped him yet.
“No one has contacted me… If they want to I’m here and I’m available.”
Defending his right to speak publicly about Demi, he said on Wednesday that the pressure of Hollywood affected his daughter.
“Yes, there are a lot of pressures. That is one of the things I worried about when she signed with Disney. It’s just going to happen,” he said.
According to one newspaper report, Patrick hasn’t seen Demi in three years but he said he was “misquoted.”
Demi Lovato is in rehab for an eating disorder. A fight with a back-up dancer, Alex Welch, led her to check into rehab for ‘emotional and physical’ issues, stemming from teenage bullying.
Patrick reiterated it was Hollywood and showbiz he feared had a negative impact on his daughter, not Disney directly.
“I’m proud that she’s working for Disney,” he said. “I’m just concerned about the industry, not them [Disney] specifically because they have taken care of Demi.
“When you chose to be a star like that it’s not the people you’re working for to blame. It’s the whole industry… the pressures and the time element that you have to put forward.”
Patrick’s relationship with his daughter has been strained since he separated from Demi’s mother, Dianna in 1994. Demi’s father says,”In the last couple of years I’ve been out of the loop, that’s for sure.”
Adding he never wanted to interfere with Demi’s career, and didn’t want to re-enter her life when she became a star.
“I never wanted to stand in their way because we’ve been away from each other from quite some time, so I didn’t want them to think that now that she’s a star, I wanted to get back into her life.
“All I want is for my daughter to be fine,” he added. “I bet the doctors are about as good as they can get… I want my little partner to come back to me.”
