Eddie Cibrian and LeAnn Rimes’ affair broke up both of their marriages well over a year ago. Why’s she coming clean about her guilt now? As her divorce from Dean Sheremet grows closer to completion — along with Eddie’s divorce from Brandi Glanfille — my hunch is that it has something to do with Eddie Cibrian’s kids.
Cibrian’s battle for custody of his sons has grown increasingly sticky — and if Cibrian and Rimes are planning on having children of their own, she may be feeling especially icky about the pain that she’s caused these boys. Details below on the custody fight for the Cibrian kids, plus highlights of what LeAnn is saying about the affair.
While Cibrian and Brandi Glanville initially hoped for an amicable divorce (who doesn’t), things grew nasty late last year when he filed for joint legal custody of Mason, then 6, and Jake, then 2. In the papers, he alleged that Glanville had physically and emotionally abused him, and was refusing to let him see the kids.
He claims that his ex was “very angry with me for ending our seven-year marriage, and she is enraged at the way in which our marriage ended. In her rage, she has resorted to physically attacking me, mentally abuses me, vandalizing my motorcycle, speaking badly about me in front of our minor children,” and more.
As for pleading his case as a dad, the papers report that he has “always been a devoted and doting father” who took time to “attend to daily needs, put him to bed, woke up with him, read to him, watched cartoons with him, gave him baths, dressed him for school.”
As the couple waits for custody to be decided, they’ve been splitting time with the kids, though Brandi picked a fight in March. Eddie had custody on Jake’s birthday, and allegedly barred Brandi from celebrating with their son that day. “I have been so cooperative with (Eddie) and (LeAnn) for the sake of my children. I even went and signed and notarized a document saying they could take my kids out of the country to Mexico on vacation,” she told E! News. “Jake is my son, not Leann’s. He should be with both his parents on his birthday.”
Unless LeAnn is heartless, these pleas from a mom — a mom whose baby-dady LeAnn stole from the nest! — have to have weighed heavily on her. So is it any wonder that she can’t hold in the guilt any longer? As she says in this week’s PEOPLE cover story, “I did one of the most selfish things that I possibly could do, in hurting someone else…I never once thought what I was doing was okay.”
Still, she says, “But I don’t regret the outcome.” That outcome is a committed relationship with Cibrian. They may be the right people for each other, but their way of going about it has certainly turned their kids, and their exes, into collateral damage. While Glanville doesn’t seem to have moved on, Rimes’ ex has:
Dean Sheremet, once a singer and songwriter, graduated with disctiction from N.Y.C.’s French Culinary Institute in March. He is currently a chef at N.Y.C.’s Nobu.
