Fatherhood certainly becomes Sir Elton John. In a recent interview with Britain’s The Guardian, the megastar showed the paternal side that’s been very much in evidence ever since he and partner David Furnish welcomed their son, Zachary Furnish-John, via surrogate.
John starts off the interview showing off photos of his 15-month-old via iPad and describing his new pre-show regimen. Before his performances at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas (his current long-term gig), he gives his son a bath and reads him a bedtime story.
He credits his family with helping him delight in working more than ever before. “If I was burnt out and just doing it to pay the bills, then it would be different…but this is the time I’m actually enjoying it the most,” he says. “…I don’t have to stay up all night doing drugs. I’m going to get up in the morning and see my little boy and see my partner. We have a life.”
But if he has his way, John will be enriching his life even further by adding to his family!
Speaking as someone without sisters or brothers, Sir Elton explains, “I think it’s difficult to be an only child, and to be an only child of someone famous. I want [Zachary] to have a sibling so he has someone to be with.”
He adds that a brother or sister could help Zachary deal with the teasing he may endure as the son of a gay couple. “I want someone to be at his side and back him up. We shall see,” he says.
And to anyone who worries that gay or lesbian parents somehow “make” their children gay, take note: John shows the Guardian reporter a shot of Zachary kissing their housekeeper’s daughter and remarks, “He’s so straight!”
Wouldn’t it be great to see Sir Elton add a “Daniel” or a “Tiny Dancer” to his family?
