EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW! Giuliana and Bill Rancic’s Journey to Family and Cord Blood Banking. No one knows more about life’s surprising twists and turns than Giuliana and Bill Rancic. After a fairytale romance between these two lovable TV personalities and the launch of their successful reality TV show, the star couple was hit not once, but twice with health news that would change their lives. I was lucky to get an exclusive interview with Giuliana and Bill as they explained why they chose to bank little Duke’s Cord Blood!
First, like many couples, the Rancics struggled with infertility. For almost a year, they unsuccessfully attempted in vitro fertilization. Unfortunately, in another unexpected twist of fate, in early 2011, Giuliana was diagnosed with breast cancer.
The positive couple wouldn’t let these set backs stop them. Even as Giuliana was beginning treatments to fight the cancer, they were asking, “what can we do to grow our family?” The answer came in the form of a surrogate and a beautiful baby boy, born on August 29, 2012.
Today, when the couple talks about their journey to parenthood, they often mention the importance of health and protecting the future health of their family. Upon their son’s birth, this desire led them to take their doctor’s advice and save their son’s cord blood.
“Considering the life-changing potential of cord blood stem cells, collecting and saving it with Cord Blood Registry was incredibly easy,” says Giuliana, whose Baby Shower Registry Included a Cord Blood Registry Kit.
Cord blood stem cells are being used today to treat certain cancers, anemias, and blood and immune disorders. They also are being researched for their ability help the body heal. These new studies could change medicine as we know it, with research being done around traumatic brain injury and autism.
While the Rancics are basking in the glow of parenthood, they’re determined to make sure other expecting parents know about the power of their babies’ cord blood. “Many diseases can be treated with stem cells and having access to your child’s could save a life. That’s why we want other couples to have a chance to get educated and know their banking options,” said Giuliana. “It’s so important.”
Personally, I did not bank my children’s Cord Blood and it is the one thing I truly regret. There were a few reasons that I didn’t.
1. Finances, it was not something I thought I could afford. I wish I knew that I could sign up for a Cord Blood Gift Registry option! That would have changed everything!!!
2. I did not have enough information! My OB never pushed it and said she had done it but did not have enough information to sway my opinion.
3. Second child OH NO! With my second child ( they are only 13 months a part) I did not understand that if you do it for one that your other child could benefit from it. So I tuned it out. I didn’t want to have to explain some day why I did this for one and not the other.
Did you bank your child’s cord blood? Are you thinking about it? Tell us your story!
