I always wondered why Fran Dresher, with her cartoon voice and legendary role as a caregiver to children, never had any of her own. And now I think we know why. It turns out the husband she had for twenty-one years is gay. But she wasn’t playing the role of a beard’…Fran revealed to In Touch Weekly that he told her that he was gay only after they got divorced. The two met at Hillcrest High School in Jamaica, Queens and got hitched when Fran was twenty-one. “Peter and I met when we were 15,” Drescher told In Touch. “We were just kids and didn’t know who we truly were. We went through a lot together.”
Having a decision to have a child is a pretty big deal and one wonders if Peter’s sexual orientation had anything to do with his decision, at least on his end, to not want to start a family. [update: I should clarify that I meant just in terms of him perhaps knowing the marriage wasn't going to last and that his heart was not 100% in the relationship which is usually a big factor when people opt to procreate.] And after their marriage ended Fran was found to have Uterine cancer and had a hysterectomy. But Fran says that she had her ovaries frozen, “so I could harvest the eggs and have a biological child through a surrogate. Thinking, always thinking!”
But during Peter and Fran’s marriage they did have a baby together, of sorts. They had The Nanny. While Fran starred in show Peter wrote, directed and produced the series.
