Fun Facts About The Grammys

I’m a trivia fan, so I thought I’d share some fun Grammy facts with you since we’ll all be watching the 2011 Grammys tonight!

The first Grammy Awards were presented on May4, 1959. There were only 22 awards; now there are over 100.

There’s only been one solo artist born in Mexico that has ever been nominated in one of the three main performance categories: Carlos Santana. Interestingly, althought Herb Alpert’s original band, Tijuana Brass, has also been nominated, the band contained no Tijuanans!

LeAnn Rimes became the youngest person to win a top Grammy in 1997; she won the Best New Artist award at the age 14.

There are five extremely well known musicians/musical groups who have never won a major performance Grammy: Bob Marley, Diana Ross, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead.

In the history of the Grammys, only two comedians have won a major performance award: Bob Newhart, best new artist in1961, and Vaughn Meader, album of the year in 1963.

In 1989, Milli Vanilli became the first artists to be stripped of their Grammy (for Best New Artist) when it was discovered they weren’t the ones singing on ‘their’ album.

The Los Angeles native with the most major performance Grammy wins is Natalie Cole. The daughter of Nat King Cole has won artist of the year, song of the year and album of the year trophies.

// The first Grammy for a Rap Performance went to DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince (aka Will Smith) in 1989.

Stevie Wonder holds the record for most Grammys won by a solo artist with 28. He also has a lifetime achievement award.

Elvis Presley never won a Grammy in a top performing category; he did win in the Gospel music category in 1971.
