Former Baywatch babe Gena Lee Nolin is opening up about a postpartum issue that rarely gets any media attention: Hashimoto’s disease, in which the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid. Over 30 million Americans are affected by the disease, with more than half of which go undiagnosed and untreated.
The leggy television beauty explains that after the birth of her son she noticed lumps of her hair falling out and gaining an excessive amount of weight while feeling both bloated and tired all the time. She tells Fox’s Pop Tarts:
“It seemed to really start after the birth of my son, so I put it down to post-partum depression, but I would literally gain 10 pounds in a single day and was constantly puffy and bloated, which is very tough when you’re in this industry.”
It turned out that for more than a decade, Gena had unknowingly been struggling with the disease in which the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid.
Geena adds: “I’ve been following a gluten-free diet and doing a lot of different things to help with my Hashimoto’s disease. I have never really told my story until now, but I want to other help people get through this.”
