It took many years and many tears for Giuliana Rancic, but at last her dream of becoming a mother is a reality. Her son, Edward Duke Rancic, just turned three weeks old, and Giuliana and husband Bill couldn’t be more delighted with their new roles as parents.
Giuliana writes in her blog for the Today show site TODAY Moms, “My journey to motherhood has been a long and strenuous one, but I always knew it would be more than worth it, and so far it is everything I dreamed it would be and more.”
The new mom recently revealed the name of the gestational surrogate who carried their baby – Delphine – and shared that she and Bill were in the delivery room when Duke was born.
Having waited so long to become parents, the Rancics don’t take anything for granted. They’re only too happy to put up with the little inconveniences, like lack of sleep. “I swear to you that Bill and I literally fight over who will be the one to get up with him in the middle of the night,” she writes. “We both just want to be with him all the time and not miss anything!”
She also loves watching a morning dad-son ritual: After Duke’s A.M. feeding, Bill and Duke take a nap together, with the baby lying face up on Bill’s stomach. “It is the sweetest thing to witness,” Giuliana reports.
After Duke’s birth in Colorado, the new family hit the road for a month-long stay in Chicago. There, the little guy is meeting friends and relatives while Bill takes care of final details for a new restaurant opening. “We’ve had so many friends and family around us and they can’t get enough of Duke,” says Giuliana. “It has been so great to be near our loved ones during this time.”
Giuliana flew to New York yesterday to help with the “Do It for the Girls” initiative, which encourages young women to perform monthly breast self-exams to aid in early breast cancer detection. She admitted on the Today show that being apart from her baby left her in tears.
She explained the origin of the name they chose. Edward was an easy call – both Giuliana’s father and Bill’s late dad had that name. And Duke? “I don’t know…there was something about it, we loved it,” she says. Learning that it means “leader” was the clincher. “It sounded like a strong, cool name.”
The baby will also look cool in the gift presented to Giuliana by the Today team: onesies with “The Duke” printed on the front.
“It has been the best three weeks of my life and I cannot wait for what the future holds,” Giuliana concludes. “For now, we are savoring every moment.”
What a happy ending!
