The Most Green Celebs!

This week has a very special hue tinting it, it is green week.  A week where we all celebrate our Mother Earth and become more mindful of how we can protect and preserve the planet we live on. And some of the people who are putting their money, their time and their fame to good use to help the earth and its inhabitants? Celebrities.

They have the cash to make large contributions and their names bring not just attention to the causes they back but also encourages others to get involved – be it monetary or through volunteer work.

To celebrate Green Week and the upcoming Earth Day, we are paying tribute to the 14 most eco-friendly celebrity parents who are trying to make the world a better place for them, their kids and for us all. Check out who made the list here. nggallery id=’117931′

    Matt Damon
    Last year Matt Damon was named the "Greenest Celebrity" by the Heart of Green Awards. Matt has put his money, energy and name on trying to provide clean water to those who need it by co-founding H20 Africa. He also started Water.org that, as The Daily Green states, "combines web 2.0 savvy, micro-loans and star power into a global, action-focused movement that is digging wells, safeguarding supplies and advocating for justice around the world, especially in distressed regions like Haiti."

    Jessica Alba
    Jessica Alba was inspired by her daughter's to try to make a positive impact on parents. She started the Honest Company that makes eco-friendly diapers, skin and bath products as well as others. She said of her project, "I created The Honest Company to help moms and to give all children a better, safer start." She also does work with Safer Chemicals Healthy Families, ONE, Habitat for Humanity, and Project HOME.

    Jay Z
    Jay-Z is another celebrity that has big supporter of clean water for those who need it. He is the founder of the UN's Water for Life, which is an organization that works to provide people all over the world with clean drinking water.

    Cate Blanchett
    When Cate Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton became the co-artistic directors of the Sydney Theater Company, she took it upon herself to make some big eco-friendly changes. The couple played a pivotal role in the Greening the Wharf project which provided 1,900 solar panels to The Wharf Theatre, as well as starting rainwater harvesting. This makes the theater almost totally carbon neutral.

    Brad Pitt
    Brad Pitt has been a very powerful force in helping to rebuild the Katrina ravaged areas of New Orleans. Not only did he put $5 million into his Make it Right organization but he has kept the momentum going and continues to build green eco-friendly homes for the people of New Orleans.

    Orlando Bloom
    New dad Orlando Bloom has been a huge supporter of the Global Green organization. He doesn't just talk the talk but he walks the walk. He drives a hybrid car, installed solar panels in his home and helped with the relief effects to clean up after the devastating 2009 Australian bush fires.

    Harrison Ford
    Harrison Ford has been involved with Conservation International for decades becoming first a board member then as vice chairman and now is on the Executive Committee. He said to Epoch Times that the ‘battle for conservation' is a "a war without an evil enemy" and it's a battle that can be won and believes "What we do today will set the course and the example for generations to come," he said.

    Harrison has also volunteered as an "airborn watchdog" for the group Riverkeeper which tries to catch those who pollute the Hudson River. Ford would patrol the river in his helicopter to look for wrongdoings.

    Last year supermodel and mom Gisele Bundchen was named the Best Green International Celebrity at the 2011 Green Awards She not only walks the eco-friendly walk, but she was named the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program back in 2009. She also supports such eco-friendly initiatives like the Drop of Water Movement.

    Kevin Costner
    Kevin Costner spent a whole lot of time in the water (with his epic Waterworld ) and it's a subject that he is passionate about. He co-founded Ocean Therapy Solutions and has spent the "last 15 years supporting research on centrifuge systems to more safely and effectively remove oil from water." And it's a device that apparently works. Oil giant BP has ordered 32 of them.

    Natalie Portman
    Natalie Portman has always had a eye for fashion, and so much so that she decided to marry a passion for the environment and a love of shoes and created a line of vegan footwear.     Pierce Brosnan
    Pierce Brosnan hasn't just played an agent of good in the movies (as James Bond) he's fighting the bad guys off screen as well. Brosnan has made many donations and appearances to support various causes but he also has worked with the environmental advocacy group the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) where he has tried to stop the Navy from using sonar systems that have a record of killing sea life.

    Woody Harrelson
    Woody Harrelson is a very outspoken advocate for the environment, being part of many a protest and even being arrested for his beliefs.

    Hilary Duff
    Hilary Duff has given very generously to Hurricane Katrina victims and also works to protect wild horses she is an ambassador for Return to Freedom which is a sanctuary for them. When I first heard about how civilization is closing in on these wild mustangs," she said, "I knew I wanted to get involved." She is one of the youngest on the list and we're sure she'll be doing far more in the future.
