Today is September 2, 2010, which means that it is 09/02/10, which means that it’s 90210 day! Beverly Hills, 90210 was the show of my generation! I grew up Brenda and Kelly, Brandon and Dylan, David and Donna and even Steve and Andrea. I lived vicariously through my favourite high school students, wishing I had my own Peach Pit to hang out at. I wanted Brenda’s hair, Kelly’s clothes, and both of their boyfriends! In a nutshell, I lived and breathed Beverly Hills 90210. I believe that this show was what started my obsession with pop culture.
So on today, 90210 day, I thought it might be nice to revisit our favourite cast members and see where they are today!
Doherty portrayed wholesome teen Brenda Walsh, twin sister to Brandon Walsh, who moved from Minneapolis, Minnesota to the lavish world of Beverly Hills. Her character was the good girl who so wanted to be bad. Doherty played Brenda from 1990-1994 when she was written off amid rumours of tension on the set. Doherty earned quite the reputation of a ‘bad girl’ during her time on the show, even earning the number 10 spot on E!’s list of the 50 Most Wicked Women of Prime Time 2004.
In 1998 Shannen was cast on another Aaron Spelling show called Charmed, about three sisters who were also witches. Charmed had a strong following but again, amid rumours of on set strife with co-star Alyssa Milano, Doherty’s character was killed off after the 3rd season.
She had a few short running shows such as Scare Tactics and North Shore before returning home last year when she reprised her role as Brenda Walsh for the 2009 spinoff of Beverly Hills 90210 simply titled 90210. She was also a contestant on last season’s Dancing With the Stars
Shannen was briefly married to Ashley Hamilton (Son of George) and Joe Francis (of Girls Gone Wild fame).
Priestley played the other half of the Walsh twins who made the big move from Minneapolis to Beverly Hills. His character, Brandon, quickly became the poster child for the kind of guy you wanted to take home to Mom. He was cute, smart, and popular. Priestley played Brandon from 1990 – 1998 and even directed 19 episodes of the hit series.
Priestley made guest appearances on numerous tv shows, including My Name Is Earl and Without a Trace, and has also continued to direct and produce various projects, including directing the episode of 90210 that featured the return of Tori Spelling’s character, Donna Martin. He is also an avid race car driver, suffering a serious crash in 2002.
Priestley has 2 children with his second wife, Naomi Lowde-Priestley, and will soon be seen in the upcoming series My Name Is Fitz.
The character of McKay was like the James Dean of West Beverly High. Perry shot to fame playing the brooding bad boy with as much money as problems. McKay romanced innocent teen Brenda Walsh and created one of the most talked about love triangles in high school history when he cheated on Brenda with her frenemy Kelly Taylor.
Ironically, he had originally auditioned for the role of Steve Sanders, that eventually went to Ian Ziering. Perry played McKay from 1990-1995 and 1998-2000. It has been rumoured that although he and Doherty were the show’s golden couple, that the two really couldn’t stand each other in real life.
Perry could never reach the kind of success he had with 90210 outside of the show. He has done bit parts in film and tv, and also a large amount of voice work. He has also been revealed to be the father of character Kelly Taylor’s son on the spinoff series 90210. Unfortunately for us fans, Perry has declined to do a cameo on the show, saying that he could never appear on the show since Aaron Spelling isn’t behind it. I still hold out hope.
Perry is divorced and has 2 children.
Kelly Taylor was the girl everyone wanted to be on 90210. She was rich, beautiful, and seemed to have it all. However over the course of the series she was the one who suffered the most! She had the drug addicted mother, became addicted to diet pills, revealed she was date raped, was stalked single white female style – and the list just goes on! But she was the popular girl and even managed to date the two hottest men on the show, both Dylan and Brandon. She was so desired that one season finale showed Kelly having to make a choice between the two friends, and famously stating “I choose me”. (she totally should have chosen Dylan)
Garth played Taylor for the full 10 seasons, premiering in 1990 until it went off the air in 2000. She also had the lead role in the WB’s What I Like About You co-starring with Amanda Bynes. In 2008 Garth returned to West Beverly as a guidance councillor for the spinoff 90210, revealing that she and Dylan McKay ended up together, however briefly and share a son. She also appeared on Dancing With The Stars.
In real life Garth is married to actor Peter Facinelli, who appears on Nurse Jackie and also as Vampire patriarch Carlisle Cullen in the Twilight series of movies. They have 3 daugthers.
Spelling, the daughter of series creator Aaron Spelling, played the loveable Martin who became famously know for her desire to remain a virgin – much to the chagrin of her long time boyfriend, David. She claims that she auditioned under a different name so as not to garner any favours from the casting director. Martin was comic relief on the show, as well as the moral majority. Her character was a welcome role model for parents and kids alike. She was most famously remembered for the prom episode where Martin showed up drunk and subsequently was banned from graduating high school. This prompted the ‘Donna Martin Graduates!’ episode that saw the entire West Beverly High student body picket the school board chanting ‘Donna Martin Graduates!’ a phrase that still shows up on t-shirts today!
After the show Spelling appeared in several independent films before venturing into the reality tv business. She married in a lavish Hollywood wedding, only to divorce 2 years later to marry Dean McDermott, a married actor she met on the set of a made for tv movie. They have currently have 2 children and star on Oxygen in Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood. Tori has made cameo appearaces on the new 90210, revealing that while she and David did marry, they were currently separated.
Green experienced the biggest transformation while on the show. His character was initially the irritating kid who was always trying to hang out with the cool kids, but transformed into one of the show’s leading men as he grew up. Green and David had a long time love of music that was often displayed on the show.
Green, like many of the rest of the cast, has gone on to do bit work on film and tv. He will be starring in the new season of Desperate Housewives as Keith, a contractor who no doubt will provide some much needed eye candy for the show.
Green and former BH 90210 cast member Vanessa Marcil have a son, Kassius together, and this past summer Green married Hollywood hottie Megan Fox. Men everywhere wept.
Ziering played Steve Sanders, the loveable rich boy who had a scheme for everything. Best friends with Brandon Walsh, it seemed that Sanders could never catch a break. From the ‘legacy key’ episode to the ‘take back the night’ episode, Sanders was always trying to redeem himself. But his character had a heart of gold and eventually ended up marrying Janet Sosna (played by Lindsay Price) and together they had a child.
Ziering also appeared in a few tv shows and independent movies, and even auditioned to replace Bob Barker as the host of the New Price is Right (which eventually went to Drew Carey). Ziering divorced his first wife, Playboy Playmate Nikki Ziering and has since remarried. He also appeared on Dancing With The Stars.
At 29, Carteris was the oldest cast member to join the show and play Zuckerman, the quiet and studious editor of The Blaze, the West Beverly High school newspaper. Zuckerman had an unrequited crush on Brandon Walsh for most of the duration of the show. Even after she wed hunky law school student Jessie and had a baby while still in College – she always held a candle for Brandon.
Carteris left the show in 1995 and went on to host her own talk show, which only lasted one season. She also appeared on the first season of The Surreal Life. Carteris is married with 2 daughters.
