Twelve years ago today, life as Kate Gosselin knew it changed forever. She and now-ex-husband Jon became parents for the first time with the births of their twin daughters, Cara Nicole and Madelyn (“Mady”) Kate.
Quicker than you can say “time flies,” the girls have grown from tiny, squirming infants to tall, lovely young ladies on the brink of adolescence. They’re also loving sisters to their sextuplet siblings; Cara and Mady helped plan their 8th birthday earlier this year, and they enjoy playing school with them, acting as the teachers.
Proud mom Kate took to Twitter early this morning to send a special message: “Happy Bday to 2 of the most wonderful ppl ever born! I’m so thankful I was blessed w/Cara & Mady! They are (2 of) the best parts of my life! XO”
So how does a famed reality-star mom of eight celebrate such a special day?
Rather modestly. Kate tweeted on Friday, “The party is ON! Homemade pizzas, cake/ice cream & a night swim.”
Yesterday, she and younger daughters Alexis, Hannah and Leah baked treats for Cara and Mady to bring to school: pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. Peanut-butter fudge was also on the menu.
Kate had a poignant moment when she went shopping for the 1 and 2 numeral candles for the girls’ birthday cake. “I almost burst in2 tears!” she confessed.
Cara and Mady have grown beyond dolls and playhouses. So what do you get two girls as they enter their final year before teendom?
Kate actually got them their big gift a couple of weeks ago: iPhone 4s (an upgrade) with cases. Cara chose a white one, and Mady got black.
Some of her followers were critical of the idea of preteens having their own phones. Kate explains that they only have the devices to stay in touch with her during their long school bus rides, as well as to talk to their dad, and she’s said in the past that they have to follow very strict rules about using them (no internet access). Besides, says Kate, she did it “because it makes them happy and because it’s their birthday and I love them :).”
Like any mom, Kate sighs, “Wish I could keep them at this age forever,” but she knows childhood is fleeting. So she – and the whole family – will enjoy a very special day that will stay in their hearts for years to come.
Happy birthday, Cara and Mady!
