But it’s a territory she’s negotiating with ease, and the new year is finding her not just surviving, but thriving. As Heidi explains in the new issue of Marie Claire, she learned early on from her mother the importance of being independent. “She told me, ‘Don’t ever depend on a man,’” says the supermodel and Project Runway host. “So I started working for myself when I was 18.”
Her shocking split left the world wondering what happened to the couple who used to renew their wedding vows in lavish ceremonies every year. But Heidi doesn’t see it as a tragedy at all.
“People say, ‘Oh, God, how devastating to go through a divorce.’ Did I wish for this to happen to my family? No,” she says. “But everyone is healthy; we’re moving on with our lives. If someone got [very sick], God forbid, that would be a real problem. It’s not what I wanted — it’s not what anyone wanted — but it’s not a real problem.”
Now that the divorce is final, Heidi has gone public with her new relationship with bodyguard Martin Kirsten, even saying that she’s in love with him. You won’t be getting a wedding invite in the mail anytime soon, though.
“I don’t think so. No. No,” she says when asked whether she’ll ever tie the knot again. “I wanted to keep the memory of our wedding alive every year; that’s why I thought it would be fun to get married over and over. But now I don’t think it’s that important. I’m not angry about anything, but I don’t think I will.”
She adds that a wedding might be “a fun thing to do” if she stays with someone for a couple of decades. Other than that, “I don’t have the urgency anymore.”
