How do so many celebrity mothers keep the baby weight off and maintain their health in the midst of their hectic work and home demands? Exercise and eating right have a lot to do with it, of course – and for some, the key lies in cutting gluten from their diets.
Gluten, a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye and spelt, can cause uncomfortable digestive problems in people sensitive to it. For patients with celiac disease, gluten causes intestinal inflammation that can eventually cause serious health problems because their bodies aren’t absorbing enough nutrients. But even people who don’t have the disease can be adversely affected by gluten; experts say as many as 10 percent of the population may be gluten-sensitive. Because many people with autism have wheat allergies, cutting gluten from their diet may help improve their symptoms as well.
Here are some well-known mothers who have turned to the gluten-free lifestyle for the sake of their health and weight (cutting out bread, cookies and cake is a good way to drop the pounds), or for the sake of their children’s well-being.

Jennie Garth 2 of 11Keeping off the pounds after baby isn't easy - and Garth has had three children! She dropped an impressive 30 pounds last year and proudly sported a fab bikini figure at age 40. She credits exercise, diet and a gluten-free lifestyle with her success - although she does allow herself a cupcake now and then.
Kim Kardashian 3 of 11Last spring, the reality star tweeted a photo of herself in a sexy getup, with the caption "Gluten free is the way to be...." No word on whether pregnancy cravings have led her to change her eating habits.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck 4 of 11The cohost of The View discovered her gluten sensitivity by accident. In 2001, while a contestant on Survivor, she noticed that her limited diet of rice and fish made her recurrent stomach problems disappear. Now she's thriving on a gluten-free diet and even wrote a cookbook, Deliciously G-Free, last year.

Miranda Kerr 5 of 11Chef-to-the-stars Kate McAloon often cooks for Kerr during long photo shoots and TV interviews. She told an Australian magazine, "She and [husband] Orlando [Bloom] only eat certified organic food and always prefer gluten-free and low-GI options." Among the actress's favorite foods: wild salmon, quinoa and coconut.
Gwyneth Paltrow 6 of 11Although she has since returned to moderate eating, the Oscar-winning actress has promoted a gluten-free cleanse regimen involving lots of greens and dairy-free smoothies.
Jessica Alba 7 of 11A diet without gluten seems like a natural for this health-conscious actress. But she's not super-strict about it; she's tweeted cheerfully about "falling off the gluten-free wagon" and indulging in red-velvet pancakes.

Victoria Beckham 8 of 11Like Hasselbeck, the former Spice Girl has said she's allergic both to gluten and to dairy (which has also been linked to celiac disease).
Jenny McCarthy 9 of 11The actress is also a well-known activist for autism awareness. When her son, Evan, was diagnosed with autism, she was determined to do everything in her power to help him. One of the therapies she tried was a gluten- and casein-free diet, which produced fast results. "In two weeks or three weeks - and this isn't for everyone, to get a reaction like this - Evan doubled his language," she has said.
Holly Robinson Peete 10 of 11Like McCarthy, Peete has a son with autism. While researching therapies, she came across information on the dietary link to autism and had RJ tested for food allergies. Sure enough, he was allergic to wheat. "So we took the wheat out, and that made a huge difference," she has said.
