How do so many celebrity mothers keep the baby weight off and maintain their health in the midst of their hectic work and home demands? Exercise and eating right have a lot to do with it, of course – and for some, the key lies in cutting gluten from their diets.
Gluten, a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley, rye and spelt, can cause uncomfortable digestive problems in people sensitive to it. For patients with celiac disease, gluten causes intestinal inflammation that can eventually cause serious health problems because their bodies aren’t absorbing enough nutrients. But even people who don’t have the disease can be adversely affected by gluten; experts say as many as 10 percent of the population may be gluten-sensitive. Because many people with autism have wheat allergies, cutting gluten from their diet may help improve their symptoms as well.
Here are some well-known mothers who have turned to the gluten-free lifestyle for the sake of their health and weight (cutting out bread, cookies and cake is a good way to drop the pounds), or for the sake of their children’s well-being.
