I am the kind of mom who never really felt the need to give my kids juice as toddlers. I just felt like they did not need it. It did nothing for their diet and potentially would create a habit that I was not prepared to indulge them in. I did though give them some fresh OJ with breakfast every now and then, I’d add a splash of fresh no sugar added pomegranate juice to their bubbly water and I would make my own fruit smoothies. But boxed juice just seemed unnecessary. The week before my son went to preschool, I did try and give him some apple juice (afraid he would drink a gallon since he had never had it before) and to be honest he really didn’t want it.
My kids drink a variety of water (with and without bubbles), herbal teas (typically cold) and occasionally some coconut water. But the majority of their meals are accompanied by pure water! My husband and I decided almost 2 years ago to take out soda from our diets. We don’t drink it at all. We decided that if we wanted the kids to drink healthy then we needed to. I don’t want to be the parent whose kids go to friends’ houses and pig out on food or drinks that we don’t have in our home. When they start asking for things, we’ll discuss. In the mean time, I feel like for as long as I can, if they don’t ask for it then I can teach them to make healthy choices.
I was so excited to hear that Brita was collaborating with Celebrity Mom Brooke Burke-Charvet as well as Alliance for a Healthier Generation, to promote healthier choices for children! So I had a chance to ask Brooke a few questions… About her partnership with Brita and the juicy news on her kids, tips on keeping the romance alive and a little scoop on Dancing With The Stars
How do you keep the romance alive? What do you do during date night? It honestly doesn’t matter what we do – it’s just nice to have an evening alone to enjoy each other’s company. We only have one rule. No talking about work!
How do you balance making yourself happy and keeping your children happy? I try to give my kids one on one time because it’s so important and makes them feel special. Lucky for me, I love my job and my family so staying balanced isn’t such a challenge. I do try and find time for myself each week – even if it’s an hour – to read a book, cook, whatever it is that will keep me balanced.
What are your tips for balancing it all for other moms? Fitness is a big one for me because it is a stress reliever; it is a priority and positively affects the mind, body and soul. Make sure to carve out your moments and make yourself as important as the rest of the family.
What is your family’s favorite meal of the day? Dinner because it is family hour. Everyone loves roasted garlic chicken, veggies and potatoes. I also make sure my family drinks plenty of water and doesn’t load up on sugary drinks. I just discovered the new Brita Bottle for Kids that has fun cool designs and a built-in filter that gets them excited about drinking more water.
What is your favorite thing about Dancing With the Stars? I love the live energy. When someone is pushed out of their comfort zone their true colors come out which makes the show so exciting. You never know what’s going to happen!
Do you have any predictions for this season? Any favorites? It’s so tough. This is such a talented cast since they are all-stars so it’s basically a finale every week. It’s anyone’s game at this point.
What is your guilty pleasure? Margarita pizza with jalapenos and olive oil. I can’t ever resist.
